Maria Shantz's versatility as a performer is evidenced in the broad range of music that she has had the pleasure of singing.
Performing lead roles in works as diverse as Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortilèges (in which she played Enfant), Bock's Fiddler on the Roof (Hodol) and Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (Countess Almaviva), her characters have run the gamut from boy child to matron.
Theatrically, Maria has had tremendous fun portraying characters such as Titania in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Frances Hunter from Marriott and Foot's No Sex Please, We're British, and Dr. Livingstone in Pielmeier's Agnes of God.
An accomplished soprano, Maria also ventures into the non-classical realm, performing American Songbook standards for public and private functions.
Having completed both an Undergraduate and Master's degree in music (at WLU and U of A respectively) and worked with some wonderful examples of talent and kindness, Maria has received opportunities to solo under the direction of musical directors such as Howard Dyck (conducting the K-W Philharmonic choir), Roger Perkins (former musical director of the Shaw Festival) and Sonia Norris (Director of LifeForce Theatre). Maria travelled to England with the Addison Chorale and had the pleasure of soloing in Canterbury Cathedral. More recently, Maria has performed the title role in Brenda Muller's Jonathon's Storm with the Ardeleana Chamber Music Society and the Blue Bridge Festival.
Maria currently resides in Niagara-on-the-Lake with her family.
